Meta Stock Is Down A Lot - Here's Why, Explained In Grade 5 Language
You might have noticed Meta's stock price dropping lately. Here's what's happening, in plain terms.
Why the stock is falling
Two things are scaring investors right now:
A big lawsuit. Meta is on trial starting August 18. Many states are suing the company, saying it made Instagram and Facebook addictive for kids and teens, and that this hurt their mental health. The worst-case fine could be huge, as much as $1.4 trillion, which is almost as much as the whole company is worth. Most experts think the real number will be smaller, maybe around $200 billion, but that's still a lot of money. The trial could last six to eight weeks.
Spending too much on AI. Meta is spending a huge amount of money building AI technology, up to $145 billion this year and that spending is eating into profits. The company's cash flow (money left over after expenses) dropped a lot as well. Because of this, Meta stopped buying back its own stock to save money.
The numbers right now
Stock price: around $546 (down about 30% from its highest point this year)
Company value: about $1.4 trillion
Sales last quarter: $60.8 billion (up 28% from last year)
Profit per share: $6.18 (a bit lower than expected)
Cash flow: only $784 million (way down because of AI spending)
Why some people still like the stock
Not everyone is worried. A few big investors actually bought more Meta stock recently, not less. They believe Meta's new AI tools (called Muse) could help the company save money and compete with other AI companies. If that works out, all this spending could pay off big later.
Also, most stock analysts still think Meta is worth more than it's trading for right now with an average price target around $785, way above today's price.
My take
There's real risk from the lawsuit, but also real potential if the AI bet works. I'm buying heavily right now.
